COMPRESSION is here with three rooms of big bad bass and dirty bizness. If you don't know, baby, time to get to know.

Upstairs, in the COMPRESSION ROOM, the Yay's most notorious drum n' bass crew will be thundering out the funk with jungle legend DIESEL BOY(Human Imprint) -- from the world renown" PLANET OF THE DRUMS ". And no, this ain't some kinda weird drum and bass bullshit. This is in-your-face dancefloor funk -- dnb how you want it to be, how you remember it when it was the hands-in-the-air, raucous party SHIT. COMPRESSION jump-up kings 2 CENTS will have the place bouncing alongside MC DINO (Bassrush LA) , dubwise don LUKEINO will be pure vibing , and big groove wizard SHARP will have the skankers skanking (and the smokers smoking) with help from the ZEZO 1. COMPRESSION IS BACK mama, and the attic is going to be ROCKING.

Two floors down, deep in the basement, get ready for the nasty dubstep groove of the RUKKUZ ROOM and The UK dubstep Kings EMALKAY, and ITCHY ROBOT. Also LA's own KNORSQ . Notwithstanding the fact the basement soundsystem is brand new and programmed to kill, RUKKUZ is bringing reinforced bass, so for the love of christ, remember your earplugs and get ready to ROAST IT. Bay area overlords SAMSUPA and ATOS 1 are coming to conquer, and with MC CHILD on the mic, you know that the basement is going to get SICK. as FUCK.

SANDHOFF DISEASE – HOW A 13 YEAR OLD
FIGHTS FOR HER LIFE WITH MUSIC!

San Francisco Musician’s are fighting back with MUSIC - On Saturday, January 16, 2010 in San Francisco, Calif. at The SF BOX, Joe Blank presents the second of 3 concert fundraisers “SETTING THE STAGE FOR HOPE”, a benefit to aid Jessica Ann Bucher.

Come join Elliott’s Evil Plan, our families and friends as we listen to some of the Bay Area's most talented performers to celebrate Jessie and help raise funds to save her fight against Sandhoff Disease!

"This is a life threatening disease. There are only about 20 new cases of Sandhoff diagnosed per year in the United States, so this disease does not get a lot of attention or funding. Our only hope to save Jessie’s life was an experimental clinical trial Stem Cell Transplant performed only at the Duke University Medical Center in North Carolina costing over $500,000," says parents Adam and Cindy Bucher. "The SETTING THE STAGE FOR HOPE event performers are donating their talents to help raise money for the Bucher family in this time of crisis and the lineup of artists is impressive".

Friends of Jessie and her family have been, and continue to, organize fund raising events to help Jessie maintain the level of care she needs. Your donations help save Jessie’s life!

Doors open at 7:30pm; music and performances begin at 8:00pm and continue throughout the night until midnight. Performances by San Francisco's number one jam band, Elliott's Evil Plan including Bay Area guitarist, Elliott Shannonhouse along with other guitarist, Mike Miranda, pianist Dave Mehrwein, bass guitarist Steve Hazlewood, Joachim Greeve on drums and Cathey Cotten on Vocals.

On Sunday afternoon, January 17, 2010 there will be a special family concert for children. Setting the Stage for Hope entertainment also includes a silent auction and food provided by Cindy Crater of http://www.barrel-tastings.com/

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:
Building on her feminist critique of love and relationships, Wendy presents the major concepts and challenges that we face trying to re-invent our relationships outside the dominant social paradigm. Radical love is the freedom to love whom you want, how you want, and as many as you want, so long a personal integrity, respect, honesty, and consent are at the core of any and all relationships. Radical love primarily focuses on love and intimacy, not sex and sexual conquest. At the heart of this work are three components: feminism, social activism, and revolution. The workshop is followed by a discussion and intended to create a non-judgmental support group.

Wendy-O Matik is the author of “Redefining Our Relationships: Guidelines for Responsible Open Relationships,” a feminist critique of love and relationships outside the status quo. As an educator and spokesperson for the polyamory community, Wendy has become a revolutionary activist of the heart. Since the release of her book, she has taught over a hundred "Radical Love &amp; Relationship" workshops internationally, helping to reshape the future of alternative relationship models for the 21st century. As an activist for social change, Wendy is pushing the boundaries on firmly rooted notions in mainstream society on relationships, love, gender, sexual equality, and sexual politics. She is available for educational and motivational discussions on the topic of alternative relationship models and responsible non-monogamy. Visit her at http://www.wendyomatik.com

The Art of Feminine Dominance Level I with Midori

Elegance, power and confidence... Do you want to know how to be a dominant
without being vulgar? How do you find a sexy and effective style of
dominance that authentic to you? Using a special technique she developed
Midori will help you to find your inner power femme archetype, allowing you
to pursue erotic fulfillment of sensual power play. Not your typical how-to
class, you'll discover the difference between constructive and destructive
desires and point you towards ways of bringing satisfaction in play for both
you and your partner.

Midori will share with you her secrets of the feminine art of dominance. She
will discuss the psychology, politics, practical exercises, techniques,
fashion and more. This class is not limited to a gender, but for all who
harbor the powerful woman within! Something for everyone from the novice to
the experienced player.

This is a prerequisite to Art of Feminine Dominance Level II and an
excellent foundation for the Forte Femme women's weekend, which will be held in San Francisco, March 19 - 21.

A long time San Franciscan and twisted kinkster, Midori is a sexuality educator and author with roots deep in Leather and sex positive activism. Frequent sightings of her from around the globe make us wonder if she ever sleeps or if she’s cloned her self. Our favorite power femme, she’s made an improbable career out of being the much sought after traveling sexpert. Don’t miss the groundbreaking book “Seductive Art of Japanese Bondage” that cracked open to mysteries to Westerners leading to a rush of interest in the rope arts, the hot essays in “Wild Side Sex: The Book of Kink” and twisted dark science fiction in “Master Han’s Daughter”

			Thursday, February 25, 2010 - 8:00 PM </div>
					<div style="margin-bottom: 1em;">
This is the perfect class for you if your bondage skills begin and end with tying your shoes. We will briefly cover the basics of bondage safety, building a rope kit, and creating a rope bondage scene. We will then teach a 5-second cuff, the figure 8 knot, a basic body harness, arm gauntlets, and the best arm binder we’ve ever seen.

- These are interactive classes- everyone will get tied up and everyone will learn to do the ties.
- All Remedial Ropes Classes are stand alone and do not require any previous rope experience.
- We provide Rope if needed and you do not need a partner to enjoy our classes.
- Rope you could bring would be two 15 foot pieces, one 35 foot pieces.
- We use nylon rope although any rope 1/2 or thinner will work in our classes.

Thursday, Feb 25th
Class from 8pm-10pm, doors open at 7:30pm
At the SF Citadel, 1277 Mission St in San Francisco

Stefanos and Chey have been doing rope bondage since 2005; they first learned bondage at Shibaricon 2005. They went to Shibaricon with mad shoelace tying skills, and sure wish they’d known the stuff they’ll teach in this class before going to a big bondage conference! Stefanos got a knot-tying badge in the Boy Scouts; Chey is an emergency room nurse.

The Marsh is proud to announce Marsh Youth Theater’s (MYT’s) Teen Troupe in the world premiere of THE WAVE, a musical by Ron Jones.

The play is based on an actual classroom experiment in fascism conducted by Jones in 1967 while he was a history teacher at Cubberley High School in Palo Alto. During a five-day period students gave up their ‘freedom’ for the prospect of being superior to their classmates. Almost immediately, the experiment got out of control. Student curiosity and questioning were replaced with conformity and violence.

The perspectives of the actual students who comprised the experiment in 1967 will be incorporated into the show’s production. The Wave translates as a story for our time, challenging MYT teen actors and their audience to examine their deepest beliefs about politics and social pressure.

MYT Teen Troupe is an intimate performing ensemble that gives form to the special talents and creative ideas of high school and college students. Teen Troupe encourages collaboration between teen actors, dancers, writers, musicians, visual and video artists and theater technicians.

			Tuesday, March 2, 2010 - 7:00 PM </div>
					<div style="margin-bottom: 1em;">
Join Robin Sukhadia in this 6 session exploration of the magical aesthetic of Bollywood film music. Through screenings, discussions, in-class performance demonstrations, field trips (SF International Asian American Film Festival), and guest lecturers, students will deconstruct the arrangements, themes and structure of Bollywood film songs from the 1930’s to present day.

Bollywood film songs will be used to examine the larger context of South Asian culture. Film-viewing, readings, lecture, and discussion will introduce students to Bollywood dance/costume, issues of gender roles and marriage, reaffirming the values of family and duty (dharma), Hindu-Muslim conflicts, and the resurgence of nationalism. Films will be in Hindi with English subtitles; no knowledge of Hindi or Indian culture is required to take this course.

Special focus will be given to some of the great film composers, including SD Burman, Naushad, RD Burman and AR Rahman. The influences and impact of playback singers such as Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Rafi and Mukesh will also be explored. Sequences from the following landmark Bollywood films will be presented for discussion: Maqbool, Omkara, Mughal e Azaam, Dil Se, Sholay, Qurbani, Silsila, Jodhaa Akbar, Lagaan, Devdas, Umrao Jaan and more.

A visually stunning and surprising favorite of music and art festival audiences, the Cubatron is a 3D light sculpture made from 8x8 foot modular cubes, each containing 1000 individually programmable RGB LEDs. Treasured Soul,

Welcome to the first Soul Sanctuary of the new year! We'll be gathering for a special New Years Day Dance at noon until 2 pm. in the main auditorium. YUM from San Luis Obispo will be playing, bringing their lively, global beat especially crafted for play and awakening. Philip Novotny, YUM"s facilitator, provides light guidance and visioning.

You may meet some new friends as well, because Soul Sanctuary is the closing dance of TIMBAVATI, our conscious New Years celebration. You may attend Soul Sanctuary on its own for $15 (or use a SS pass), or enjoy it as part of your Timbavati experience.

				THEATREWORKS PRESENTS SPECTACULAR BENEFIT CONCERT:
GROOVELILY’S “SLEEPING BEAUTY WAKES”
JANUARY 8, 2010, IN PALO ALTO

TheatreWorks, the nationally acclaimed theatre of Silicon Valley, is thrilled to announce the return of its favorite pop-rock group, GrooveLily. The authors of TheatreWorks’ sensational hit shows STRIKING 12 and LONG STORY SHORT are returning to the Lucie Stern Theatre on Friday, January 8, to perform a benefit concert of their latest album, SLEEPING BEAUTY WAKES, a fractured fairytale. Band members Brendan Milburn, Valerie Vigoda, and Gene Lewin give this classic children’s story an exciting and decidedly modern twist when, after her centuries long snooze, Beauty wakes to find herself far from her magic kingdom, in a contemporary sleep disorder clinic where all the princes seem to have disappeared. V.I.P. tickets, which include a pre-show dinner reception with GrooveLily, center orchestra seats, and a copy of the hit album, are $225. Performance-only tickets are available for $75. All audience members are invited to attend a post-show champagne reception with the band. Proceeds will directly benefit TheatreWorks’ education and outreach programs. For more information, please call (650) 463-1960 or visit www.theatreworks.org.

SLEEPING BEAUTY WAKES began as a commission from Deaf West Theatre, who after seeing STRIKING 12, asked GrooveLily composers Brendan Milburn and Valerie Vigoda to create another musical fairytale that could be performed with a company of both deaf and hearing actors, but without focusing on issues of deafness. Intrigued by the idea, Milburn and Vigoda proposed the story of “Sleeping Beauty” set in a sleep disorder clinic, not only unraveling the plight of the dislocated princess trying to find her way in a world of malls and clinics, but exploring the concept of what it means to break out of sleep, and live awake in the world. The story was especially significant for Milburn and Vigoda, who were new parents at the time, and could relate to the plight of the king and queen, who go to extreme, ridiculous, and ultimately futile lengths to keep their daughter safe. SLEEPING BEAUTY WAKES premiered in 2007 as a co-production with Center Theatre Group in Los Angeles, and included Milburn and Vigoda signing, singing, acting, and playing instruments onstage with the rest of the cast.

GrooveLily’s holiday offering, STRIKING 12, a rewired version of Hans Christian Anderson’s classic tale “The Little Match Girl,” debuted at TheatreWorks in 2004, and was an instant hit, going on to enjoy a successful Off-Broadway run. More recently, TheatreWorks partnered with Vigoda and Milburn to bring the world premiere of their work, LONG STORY SHORT, to the Bay Area in December 2008, where it was lauded by critics and audiences alike. At TheatreWorks’ 2009 New Works Festival, local crowds got a sneak peek at the group’s latest work with Joe DiPietro, ERNEST SHACKLETON LOVES ME, a fever dream musical in which exhausted but talented video game score composer Kat hallucinates that the famed Arctic explorer is phoning her from beyond time. In addition to contributing songs for the latest installment in Disney’s Tinker Bell films, Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure, Milburn and Vigoda have been selected to receive the 2009 ASCAP Foundation Richard Rogers New Horizons Award.

Valerie Vigoda (electric violin, vocals) has toured the world with Cyndi Lauper, Joe Jackson, and the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, and has opened for Tina Turner and Cher. An honors graduate of Princeton University and a former Army lieutenant, Vigoda founded GrooveLily (originally The Valerie Vigoda Band) in 1994, and has seen the band release six critically acclaimed albums. Brendan Milburn (keyboards, vocals), received his MFA in musical theatre from NYU's Musical Theatre Writing Program but was instead drawn into a rock band. His road time with GrooveLily has proven to be a way back into writing musicals. Gene Lewin (drums, vocals), earned a Master's degree from the Manhattan School of Music and has appeared on album recordings with George Coleman, John Patitucci, and many others.

TheatreWorks is currently celebrating its 40th anniversary season. With approximately 9,000 subscribers and 100,000 patrons per year, TheatreWorks has captured a national reputation for artistic innovation and integrity, often presenting Bay Area theatregoers with their first look at acclaimed musicals, comedies, and dramas, directed by award-winning local and guest directors, and performed by professional actors cast from across the country.

Marvel at the spectacular forms than ribbon can take! In this workshop, students will use pleated and interlaced grosgrain ribbon to create beautiful French hat decorations called cockades or cocardes. The namesake of the cockscomb, these centuries-old geometric ribbon forms were especially popular during both world wars in the 20th century. They are used as military insignia, award ribbons, shoe bows, jewelry, as well as hat, dress, and home furnishing decorations. In class, Candace will share handouts filled with fascinating motifs: rosettes, fans, wings, pin wheels, sunbursts, and even buzz saws. Students will make samples of basic folds, and lots of variations on the theme.

The 20th Century designers Dior, Poiret, Lanvin, and Boue Soeurs, all used varieties of this versatile rose, a must in your ribbonwork repertoire. Some examples were formed on dome-shaped buckram discs; others were stuffed to give them their namesake “cabochon”. Nicknamed “cabbage rose” or “chou rose”, these domed beauties can be made with continuous ribbon, or many pieces of folded fabric. We’ll make them all!

How many of you have made garments that are hanging in your closet because they don't fit properly? This class is a wonderful opportunity to bring in muslin mock-ups and have Lynda fit them and help you alter the pattern accordingly. You will leave with one or two "needle ready" patterns and the knowledge to continue adjusting your own patterns. We will also discuss line and proportion related to various figure types.

“Sounding like a sun kissed Brazilian soundtrack from the ‘70s, this tasty afro beat collaboration between two of the genres biggest players has funk horns aplenty and chilled vibes throughout. For fans of Fela Kuti, Gang Starr and everyone in between.” - Dazed &amp; Confused on "El Nino Y El Sol"

Adrian Quesada and Martin Perna, respective bandleaders of famed ensembles Grupo Fantasma and Antibalas, once again unite under the Ocote Soul Sounds banner for their new long player, "Coconut Rock."

The third album released by Ocote Soul Sounds seamlessly entwines the grit and funk of the gridlocked NYC streets, with the voices and rhythms of the dusty lanes of Latin America.

This time around finds the duo loosened up and slipping effortlessly into their trademark psychedelic afro-latin funk groove. From the Latin breakbeat rhythms of album lead-off ‘The Revolt of the Cockroach People’ to the cumbia bounce of ‘Tu Fin, Mi Comienzo’ to the easy guitar soundscapes of ‘Vendendo Saude e Fe’ featuring Brazilian songstress Tita Lima, "Coconut Rock" is the third chapter in Ocote Soul Sounds’ unparalleled journey through sonic realms beyond!

On their 10th studio album, "Sorry For Partyin'," Bowling for Soup prove that no matter what lame new trends may lurk outside their studio walls, they've got the hits, fits, sh*ts and giggles to keep coming out ahead. From side-splittingly funny double entendres to call-and-response jams you'll undoubtedly be hearing in high schools worldwide, the album features some of the funniest, most infectious songs of BFS' 15-year career. Of course, the album also packs some of the strongest, most confident songwriting in BFS' catalog, proving once again that these guys are the masters of their craft.

Let's also remember that THIS is who BFS are: a worldwide phenomenon with a string of hit singles (including 2006's "High School Never Ends" and the 2004 MTV and radio smash "1985) to their credit. A fan-favorite live act whose chemistry is so innate they've never had to prepare a set list. And a TV-and-movie-soundtrack juggernaut whose Emmy-nominated contribution to Disney's "Phineas and Ferb" is literally the most widely heard cartoon theme song on the planet. Quite a step up from the salad days when they were handing out demos in Warped Tour parking lots - even if the motives behind the music have stayed pure since then.

Listen to "Preparations Kids Choir" by Prefuse 73
It’s hard to think of a name that carries as much weight in both hip-hop and avant-rock circles as Prefuse 73, who in the past year alone has been asked to remix TV On The Radio, Pelican, BLK JKS and Cornelius, not to mention his early collaborations with School of Seven Bells and Battles. These interactions have clearly helped to shape the evolving Prefuse 73 sonic aesthetic, which has expanded to include Herren’s twisted visions of prog-rock, “machine funk” and global psychedelia.

"For Everything She Touched Turned Ampexian," Herren rejected the idea of straight digital recording and instead went the much more intensive route of recording to analog Ampex tape, giving the album the sound of a lost tape of exploratory studio musicians from the not-too-distant past. In addition to the recording process, "Ampexian" also differs in its composition, existing as a tapestry of tracks of varying lengths and moods, albeit with a remarkable linear flow and, of course, unmatched rhythmic bump.

"Everything She Touched Turned Ampexian" also marked the beginning of three-album release cycle for Herren, as he released two other efforts in Spring 2009 under his various monikers. He follows "Ampexian" with his newly minted Diamond Watch Wrists (featuring Zach Hill from Hella) "Ice Capped at Both Ends" LP also via Warp in April. Then in May, Herren will follow up with a new Savath and Savalas release, "La Lama," on Stones Throw.

Nicky DelDrago was an active guitar player in the San Francisco Bay Area music scene for 30+ years. He performed and toured with such acts as Metropolis, The Debra Knox Band, The Alameda All Stars, HearSay, The Fear, and many others. Ten years ago, he and his family moved to Florida, where Nicky (also a very talented graphic artist) launched his own custom airbrush painting business, Vicious Cycles, specializing in custom paint for everything from motorcycles to electric guitars.

This year Nicky was diagnosed with cancer. The good news? He has had surgery and subsequent radiation treatments, and has been declared cancer-free. The bad news? The experience has left him over $70,000 in debt. Nicky and his family have no medical insurance.

“I couldn’t stand by and watch this destroy Nicky and his family,” said long time friend and fellow guitarist Marke “Jellyroll” Burgstahler. “Many people rallied behind me when my first wife was fighting cancer and they raised enough money for us to schedule an expensive treatment. I had to do something. I know this is a tough time for everyone, but Nicky’s in a bad way.”

“Nicky suggested I approach Joe Satriani about participating in a musical benefit. Joe was all over it – he said yes in a heartbeat.” Joe needs no introduction – he put the instrumental guitar music genre back on the map with his release of “Surfing With The Alien,” and continues to draw new fans with his new project, Chickenfoot. “Joe is a long time friend of Nicky’s, and wanted to help however he could. This got the wheels turning, so I approached other musicians that Nicky and I knew, and it all began to fall into place.”

Danny Chauncey from 38 Special was also on board right away, and suggested I call his old bandmates from Billy Satellite; a very popular Bay Area band from the late 80’s that was signed to Capitol Records. The singer from the band (Monty Byrom) had gone on to tour and record with Eddie Money, and has his own band, Big House, that was signed to MCA Nashville. “Of course I called my brother-in-law (Brad Gillis from Night Ranger), and he offered to play with us (the Alameda All Stars… Gregg Allman’s touring band for 10+ years). Besides performing with all of these folks at one time or another, Nicky also used to play and tour with a local musician and actress by the name of Debra Knox, and she jumped at the chance to help.”

Celebrated progressive rock / cutting-edge metal band Between the Buried and Me (BTBAM) has just released its long-awaited new album "The Great Misdirect." In celebration of the record’s release, BTBAM has announced both fall 2009 and winter 2010 headlining tours.

Merging unparalleled musical bravery, prodigious musicianship, flawless execution and an angular landscape of forward thinking ideas, Between the Buried and Me reinvent the rock 'n roll idiom while pleasing their harshest critics: themselves. Joining metal’s dexterity and progressive rock’s forward-looking action, BTBAM create spine-tingling sound that contains visceral power, labyrinthine arrangement, mind-boggling melody and majestic beauty. Since its inception, the band has proven itself as a progressive rock pacesetter whose modernist clang pegs it as a paradigm to be followed and a yardstick by which other bands are measured.

Luce began in 2000 as a one-man band when Tom Luce began writing songs in his bedroom in the foggy Richmond District of San Francisco. But it wasn't long before his self titled first CD gained immediate attention on Bay Area radio stations such as San Francisco’s KFOG. The album's single, “Good Day” was soon picked up in Hollywood and appeared in movies such as How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days and 13 Going On 30, and television shows like The O.C. and Alias. In 2003, Luce earned the band the California Music Award for “Outstanding Debut Album.” And so the band took to the road, and toured the US playing alongside bands like Sixpence, None The Richer and Goo Goo Dolls.

In the early spring of 2005, Luce’s sophomore album, "Never Ending," was unveiled to a packed house filled with eager fans who welcomed the new music with open arms and plenty of excitement. "Never Ending’s" single, “Buy A Dog” found its way onto the USA Network’s Psych and the silver screen’s Frank, The Dog. In the fall of 2007, Luce was awarded “Best Band You Should Know About” by San Francisco Magazine readers.

Despite a stroke of bad luck in which Tom's house burnt to the ground and the band's tour van and trailer with all it's gear were stolen, the band continues to persevere in the face of those crushing setbacks. In 2008, Luce attracted the attention of an exciting new Bay Area based record label, Opus Music Ventures, and at the top of this year, became one of it’s first signing bands. With the powerful force of the young energetic label, Luce now has full service publicity, management, a tour support team and released their much anticipated third album, "Corner of the World," this past spring. It is sure to take the band to new and soaring heights.

"Mr. Hoyle is both a first-rate reporter and actor.”
--New York Times

“Hoyle has a gift for mime and vocal mimicry that recalls solo artists John Leguizamo, Sarah Jones or Lily Tomlin.”
--San Francisco Chronicle

“Hoyle is a remarkable actor capable of transforming his voice and body in an instant."
--Oakland Tribune

The Marsh is proud to announce the world premiere of Dan Hoyle’s new solo show, “The Real Americans”. After traveling the globe for his first play, “Circumnavigator,” and studying Nigerian oil politics for his third, “Tings Dey Happen,” this time Hoyle is back in the United States, turning his eye and ear on America’s culture wars. Fleeing the liberal bubble of San Francisco and his hipster friends, Hoyle spent 100 days traveling through small-town America in search of some tough country wisdom and a way to bridge America’s urban/rural divide. Instead, Hoyle found himself immersed in the populist anger of the people whom Sarah Palin famously described as ‘The Real Americans’ and awed at the disconnect between Obama Nation and Palin Country. Portrayed with humor, sympathy, confusion, angst, and song, this vivid performance challenges the audience to move beyond their bafflement and engage with the future of a politically polarized America.

				WORKSHOP
In the first of three classes, Torah scribe Julie Seltzer, who is writing a complete Torah in the galleries of the Museum as part of the exhibition As it is Written: Project 304, 805, will demonstrate the connections between food and text by combining a personal tour of her scribal workshop with Torah study and a session baking challah in the shape of Hebrew letters.

Before becoming a scribe, or soferet, Julie Seltzer was a baker at the Isabella Friedman Center in Connecticut. Among her culinary achievements was a series of challah breads evoking Hebrew letters, or a theme from the weekly Torah reading.

For most of its history the Torah was “read” primarily through images carved in stone, pieced together from mosaics, and assembled in stained glass. The powerful hold these representations had on the popular imagination continues to impact our understanding of the Bible today. Yet, the role of the artist as interpreter of the text is often overlooked.

In this series, which is presented in conjunction with the exhibition As it is Written: Project 304, 805, we will explore three archetypal stories that have been depicted throughout the ages—Cain’s fratricide, the flood that spared Noah, and the ziggurat of Babel—through the study of texts and the basics of visual literacy. The class will also be “in conversation” with newly commissioned artistic responses to the Book of Genesis as part of As it is Written: Project 304, 805.
