hooray & welcome back to artists who will be returning to the St. Augustine Plaza to sell their art
Once again, the heart & soul of downtown St. Augustine will be rejuvenated- as the artists will be back in the plaza setting up their newest works of art! What a long time it's been since we were last allowed to practice our freedom of expression in the nation's oldest marketplace! As long as it's considered art by the supreme court, it's allowed to be expressed & sold in the plaza de la constitucion- our public forum where we're protected by the 1st & 14th amendments of the U.S. Constitution. So, let's gather here in celebration of the return to justice in our nation's oldest city! We need to express ourselves through art, movement, music & writing from time to time in order to feed our souls & to be heard within our community. Without the artists in the park keeping the flow, downtown had definitely lost it's charm. Tourists & locals alike have always been in favor of having the local artisans around to offer cultural diversity & flavor to the downtown scene...Believe it or not, it was the artists in the park who created a buffer between the tourists & the overgrown population of homeless vagrants & loiterers downtown....soon after the city did away w/the arts scene in the plaza, downtown shifted into a cultural wasteland- devoid of all traces of a once flourishing arts movement. So to end this review on a positive note, I'd like to invite all freethinkers, artisans & citizens alike to come on downtown & enjoy our newly re-established right to free expression in our nation's oldest marketplace within the nation's oldest city! Long live art & the freedom of expression in our public forums! Finally, our voices will be heard!! - Jenna , posted 05/15/09
